Tomasz Kapitaniak jest profesorem mechaniki teoretycznej i stosowanej oraz kierownikiem Katedry Dynamiki Maszyn Politechniki Łódzkiej od 1992 roku. Został zaproszony do wygłoszenia ponad 100 konferencyjnych wykładów plenarnych oraz ponad 250 seminariów i innych referatów na całym świecie. Jest członkiem rad redakcyjnych kilku czasopism i honorowym redaktorem International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos. Opublikował ponad 300 prac naukowych w renomowanych czasopismach z listy Clarivate Analitytics, cytowanych ponad 8000 razy. Jego badania koncentrują się na dynamice nieliniowej. Opracowanie metod sterowania chaosem bez sprzężenia zwrotnego, identyfikacja i opis nowych typów bifurkacji, identyfikacja mechanizmu synchronizacji w sprzężonych oscylatorach mechanicznych oraz wyjaśnienie pochodzenia losowości w układzie mechanicznym należą do jego najważniejszych odkryć naukowych. Został wybrany członkiem Polskiej Akademii Nauk (członek korespondent w 2013 r., członek zwyczajny w 2019 r.) i Academia Europaea w 2021 r. Posiada doktoraty honoris causa na Uniwersytecie Państwowym w Saratowie (Rosja) i Politechnice Lubelskiej (Polska) odpowiednio w 2001 i 2014 roku.
